Antidote
By Richard Schnap

It was a cold, grey, and sunless Saturday
The blue sky hidden behind darkened clouds
As I watched the news from near and far
A litany of deaths, disasters, and despair
I scanned my email for encouraging signs
A letter from a friend who I thought I’d lost
But only found solicitors hustling stocks
And potions to enhance the potency of love

But across the hall the orthodox doctor
Had invited his friends to celebrate the Sabbath
I listened to their chorus of bright laughter
A swell of voices as cheerful as children
And it lifted my heart to know the world
Was not just a place for black disappointments
That in the next room was a circle of joy
Singing and singing, singing and singing
