Bedtime Soliloquy
By Sue Silver

I like a pile of books beside my bed.
They balance there stacked near my head and
each night before I sleep I reach for one.
Occasionally I take one back
to rest upon my library shelf
and find another that calls my name.
Here’s the gardening book from my niece in NZ
or maybe this photography book would do,
for Spring nudges in, and colors all the world.
Each night before I sleep, I reach for one.
I love my books they are like friends
that warm my life and make amends,
I live alone and with this pandemic
I miss my friends and family.
Yes here, this precious time to read and so,
each night before I sleep, I reach for one.
It’s funny how they all stack up
as if they call their families in
to play and dance, whatever they do
or even read one to the other,
stories I would share myself,
a happy notion of a writer’s world
leaning in one to another.
Each night before I sleep, I reach for one.
Now and again I take the stack
and clean and dust with sad feeling
to see which ones I’ll truly read
before they reach the ceiling.
Perhaps they’ll take a bookshelf break
and then I’ll bring them back again.
Each night before I sleep I reach for one.
