Birth Flower of a Honeybee
By Barbara van der Vossen

My corner still needs tending
Summer blend of grass grown high
Shall I let it meadow for the moments
I can’t quit my peace with silence held
so it can grow over my head?

Trellis that wants mending
Fleur-de-lis fence bent by Russian Sage
Wild Anemone I could but don’t curtail
My birth flower strong stemmed
and delicate, delicate flowered

Late sun hovers near the tops of trees
Watercolor clouds blend and drift
This little person stands still in sweat
Depleted like a honeybee
its labors sold in a bear-shaped jar

Eyes raised in search of something
Skein of geese in formation above
Sunbeams rippling on their golden bellies
Painting an ocean’s shimmer
Against the sky gone artist’s palette
