Build me this
By Kaitlyn Duling

Begin with the gaps
found between teeth and
fences and conversations
with old friends. Sound out
adobe. Stick your tongue
to the clay walls like
windows fit to corners.
Measure tile in thick
squares,
walk up down streets
and count the objects
people use to save
their parking spots:
lawn chairs, laundry
baskets, old air-
conditioning units and
one drawer pulled
from your great-
aunt’s wooden
chest. Hold your breath
along the edges;
forget the doors
altogether and carve on
until empty. Build
me this and run
through it, stopping
only to kiss the ground.
