Jean
Hendrickson lives on the lip of the amazing Chesapeake Bay, where she
writes prose and poetry in bad weather, and in good, if she just cannot
resist. Her work has been published in
Powhatan Review, NOO Journal, Roux Journal, Moondance, The Daily Press (of the Virginia Peninsula), Reader’s Digest,
and several other publications. Reading the work of other writers is
one of her greatest joys. When you read this, appreciate the imagery,
the warmth, and the deft little touch of humor in it.

By Jean M. Hendrickson

I am no Joshua Tree
in the handsome wind;
no stately saguaro,
working a sympathetic magic;
no man-sown formal garden.

I thrive in the messy country
of untamed wood
where roots tangle
and the occasional tree
leans on its neighbor.

    Ah, Jean — how beautifully your images flow and settle in the poet’s soul.

    Lovely. Wendell Berry himself could not have said it better!

    And wouldn’t you know, today, August 5, just so happens to be Wendell Berry’s birthday! He is 75 today! Yay!
