Contributor Series 10: Silken Rags
A Brief Infatuation at the Shoe Store
By Grace Burns

The black knee-high boots
with pointy toes
and wedge heels lay nestled
in a bed of delicate tissue.

I am no power dresser, but
one whiff, one caress of
buttery leather has me convinced
that fate has brought us together.

I will ditch my collection of
ill-fitting sweatpants,
and harvest an array of tights,
leggings and skinny jeans.

Hoodies and t-shirts shall be
banished for all eternity.
Dingy sneakers and sports socks, be gone!
I shall be a hot mom in
m fashion-forward ensembles.

There’s no sense in putting off my
stylish destiny any longer.
I shall slip on these boots and
bring them home to
start my trendy new life.

But where on earth
am I going to wear these
black knee-high boots
with pointy toes and
wedge heels? The supermarket?

And when would I find
the time to shop for fine clothes?
And how long would it take me
to ruin them while making
dinner and cleaning dishes?

These boots shall remain in their
nest. I know who I am.
