Contributor Series 11: On Birthdays
Found on the Corner of Stadium and Main

By Monica Crumback

And how old? They always ask
as if there is some answer
less vague and better weighed

than I don’t know.
If there is, then I don’t have it.
All I know is you were young,

but now your face is turning gray.
And your legs are much less nimble.
And your eyes are starting to fade.

So I wish I knew, but no,
there’s never been one day
on which to pause and celebrate.

Besides, your birthday now is any day
we peek into your corner, sweets,
and find you still awake.

Monica Crumback’s most recent poem to appear here was Plumage, published as part of Contributor Series 10: Silken Rags, in December 2011.
