My Birthday

By Murray Dunlap

Oh to be 35, in a wheelchair, and live at home
Because of a car crash, hmph
Trying trying trying to stay sane
Failing failing failing
Relearning to walk, one day at a damn time
So I turn 36, in a cloud of anger
But I turn 39 in a passionate vision of happiness …
Then comes 40, and who knows what it’ll bring
I’ll remain a writer, and the possibilities are limitless
40, my goodness, how did I get here?
But with love, goodness too, but love
I’ll see myself through

Murray Dunlap’s most recent poem to appear here was Winds (June 2012).
