A Hungry Wife
By Cassie Premo Steele
1.
The joy I feel
when I touch
your hip
in the dark
is the knowledge
that my body
is bread
and you can eat
this simple meal
and be satisfied.
2.
Taste the time
we have together.
It is not long.
Nothing is.
3.
I want more
I want to fill
to be full
to be filled
to be.
4.
In my dream
I saw people starving.
They wanted bread
every day–
only bread.
5.
I want bread
and basil,
bread and chocolate,
bread and butter,
bread and wine.
Am I selfish?
6.
This hunger
of knowing
there must be more
keeps me moving
toward the unseen
source.
7.
Sometimes I feel
I’ve had enough
and we sleep
soundly.
8.
Faith is knowing
I will want more
in the morning.
9.
I am
your joy
and this is
my livelihood.
We need
to invent
words
for this.
10.
I am
a hungry
wife.

A Beautiful confession of love.
I love this poem! And I loved hearing your interview on 15 Minutes of Poetry with Annmarie.
I liket he way this unfolds and then ends in truth. I read stanza five several times because I liked it so much, the detail but more, I like what it represented, the basil, chocolate, butter, wine. Excellent choices.
Mmmmmm-hmmmm. The emotion behind the words gives a substance that the words alone cannot convey. I wish this were a universal response, that all people could be so sensitive and … hungry.
This is just fantastic! (my word of the day apparently!) I especially love the st and the 8th. Great work 🙂
