Who are you
The beautiful poetess asked
Seeking to peek inside my soul
I am that which is unknown even
To myself I tell her
I am yesterday and tomorrow
I am happiness and sorrow
I am the son of my father
And the father of my son
I am learned yet I am uninformed
I experience heart aches and sadness
And darkness in my mind
When I witness injustice
My anger flares at man’s malevolence
And his haughty and cold arrogance
My feelings are worn on my sleeve
Yet I am as hard as nails
I am soft and have a loving heart
Yet I am strong and tenacious
I desire to be great and yet
Spurn greatly the spotlight
I am a multifaceted dichotomy
I am good and I am evil
I am a clear window to truth
And an open door to ennui
I am that which is in my ancient genes
And I am that which is inside my mind
I am at times an opaque prism
Reflecting only darkness
At other times a translucent mirror
Refracting back peace and light
At times I am a kind and gentle soul
At other times I have a ruthless tongue
I am sure of myself in all things
Yet I am also insecure
I shed salty tears when I rage
And smile warmly in my serenity
I am warm hearted toward humanity
Yet I can be calloused toward individuals
I love animals birds flowers and bees
I love little children and caring people
I abhor bigotry condescension and ignorance
I cannot tolerate meanness or spite
I fight mightily for the underdog
And for truth to prevail
Once with power and status
And now just with my pen
Dear poetess I guess in all honesty
I am actually just a simple man
