Contributor Series 6: A Currency of Words
In the Name of All That’s Holy
By Jeanette Gallagher

In a quaint, quiescent
Countryside called Montvale
The villagers thrive

As one in a state of grace
Deserving as God’s chosen
Countrymen where righteous

Souls abide and love endures
Exemplar ethics in all that’s holy
Virtue paragons: alabaster white.

Scandal rocks sacred ground
When life’s flow shames
One’s family name

While daughter delivers
Female child good townsmen
Christen bastard

Decide what else will do
But seal her fate and
Desecrate certificate of birth
By stamp, Illegitimate.

Jeanette Gallagher’s poem Circling Creativity appeared as part of Contributor Series 5: Dramatis Personae at vox poetica in June 2010.

  1. Jeanette, this poem touched me. I was there and felt her pain. Ignorance is the name of the town.

  2. Kay Middleton says:

Jeanette has such a varied voice. This one gleams and reflects like polished silver. Bravo.
