Is It a Poem?
By Frank Cavano

Is it a poem or a prose poem?
If a prose poem, is it prose or
poetry? Is the verse free or too
expensive to be published? Do
you like poetry to rhyme? And
what do you call it if it doesn’t?
Oh, that’s right, free verse! But
are there enough metaphors and
do you comprehend all of them?
You do! And is that good or does
it bespeak a lack of cleverness on
the part of the poet? Not so much
alliteration now! Is it a real poem?

Does it qualify as a sonnet? Strict
criteria or loose? Always iambs or
just sometimes? The last two lines
indented, right? Hell, maybe I will
try to write a villanelle and end up
completely confused. Haiku! Did
someone sneeze? Well God bless!

Is it a poem, a real poem? Let the
literati decide. I merely ask that it
be written by a Heart. For can the
rose be a rose absent all its thorns?

No Contest, published in May 2010 as part of Contributor Series 5: Dramatis Personae, is the most recent poem by Frank Cavano to appear at vox poetica.
