Poet and Lyricist: A Love Poem

1.
You caught my ear, the first time you spoke
a stressed consonant here and there.

You used words I rarely hear,
and I was unaware.

You gave me your name, your heart and
your tongue.

I gave you my story,
a song unsung.

2.
You helped me, lover, to find my throat,
many a night and morning.

You bit into it, and drew my doubt,
and swallowed all my warnings.

A two-year program, a two-year affair,
was all I needed to poetically swear

that tangled words, that clips and phrases
have given me grace that
flows and amazes.

That, in two years, our love has lingered,
and in two years, I have fingered

at the edges of confidence and art
while you steadily helped
pump my heart.

A Winter Poem (August 2010) was BR Belletryst’s most recent poem to appear at vox poetica.
