Poetic Insomnia
By Kenneth Karrer

They come to me in
p-i-e-c-e-s

They sit beside my ear

and nip

and gnaw
and chew
Symbolisms onomatopoeic
(hidden meanings to eschew)
wasted on a pillowed
Head.

Lightly, slightly, they
alliterate
and often rhyme and
come
(again quite late)
and claim their time.

Soon, if well behaved
They form in
l
i
n
e
s
and stanzas
and march to proper
meter
(yes, iambs if they’re noble)
Still others serve
to
only clutter and produce
sonombulatory mutter
(move, damned Spot, this is my “best bed”)

And as this bard begins
to snore
some wise trochee
SHOUTS
“what’s all this meta for?!”

Kenneth Karrer’s poem It Happens Every Spring is his most recent appearance at vox poetica.
