Another Day’s Work
By Jeanette Cheezum

Pick them up and set them down
one foot in front of the other.
Shoulders back and core straight.

Don’t look them in the eye.
Think … you have two grapes waiting
for your breakfast. Walk past them.
A half a potato, no butter and
two slices of lettuce with balsamic
vinegar for lunch.

You’re near the end of the runway
you can do it; there’s blow waiting
in the dressing room.

Good turn you didn’t fall, maybe a
meal tonight before you purge.
Cameras flashing you almost fall.
The sons of bitches can all die; you
hate this job.

Jeanette Cheezum’s most recent poem to appear at vox poetica was Bones, published in October 2010 as part of Contributor Series 7: The Confessional Diary of Bone.
