My Purple Passion
(with apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning)
By Sandra Forte-Nickenig

How do I love thee glorious nightshade?
Let me count the ways androgynous one.
You awesome aubergine Indian star
the earth is your fullness oh wine-tinged fruit.
I love your pear-shaped bottom filled with seeds
tantalizing texture to tease my tongue.
I love your soft skin nectar of nations
purple shimmer, white goddess, green blossom
I love you baked on the tines of a fork.
I love you stewed, you melt in my mouth.
I inhale your essence, slithery sauce,
you bring forth the scent of the Orient.
I dream of your taste in solitude.
I close my eyes; my cheeks turn lavender.

Sandra Forte-Nickenig’s poem The Voice of God appeared at vox poetica in June 2010 as part of Contributor Series 5: Dramatis Personae.
