Dark Ages

By Sharon Poch

Dead things pattern my world,
three-dimensional tattoos carved bone-deep,
intersecting designs inked the color
of sparrows found frozen
in winter’s furrowed fields

Crusty leaves, brittle veins squeezed dry,
molder in coffined layers,
their fusty breath pungent
with humus
and felled pine needles

Wolf moon rises, shadows fall
on numb mimes frozen in place,
a silent choir listening to the wind mourn,
low and brown
in hibernal requiem

One Response to “Dark Ages”

  1. Jean says:

    Sharon,

    Love your dark images like
“…inked the color of sparrows found frozen…”

    “Wolf moon rises, shadows fall
    on numb mimes frozen…”

    and

    low and brown
    in hibernal requiem.”

Thank you for this deep, dark poem.
