First-Ever vox poetica Poetry Contest! Today’s Words 1st Runner-up:
New Years
By Hugh Fox

Yearless at this indefinite cancer-point, just
sliding through the flame-colored trees and
checking the weather forecast from the swans
and geese and Bernadete’s temperament,
loving leaf-fall, leaf-birth, granddaughter birth,
daughter-visit, a dinner grease-wrap, bath-soak,
THE COLOR PURPLE, LES DEMOISELLES
D’AVIGNON, last night’s Debussy’s DEUX ARABESQUES,
a three AM phone call from Avignon, “Je t’aime … ,”
twenty-three years since we said we cut bonds, but
then this morning an e-mail with her picture at 73, still
looking forty-five, a week before the Boston grandkids
arrive for Halloween, everything hallowed, blessed,
not no but ALL gods on all mountains, in all the clouds,
rain, not counting, just waiting for an end I hope never
comes.

This free-form associative poem is like poetic impressionism: each word is a separate point of color; taken as a whole there is a completely painted narrative.

Hugh Fox’s most recent poem to appear at vox poetica was Boneing, part of Contributor Series 7: The Confessional Diary of Bone.

  1. I found your poem interesting. I don’t think I’ve read anything like it before.
