Friendly Neighbors
By Joanna C Valente

they cut them down,
your bushes and drove
away the bees that lived
beside those greens.
you could say they ate you
right up.

you suggested to build
a fence in their place;
it was obvious from
the start dead wood
cannot imitate live things.
it was almost as bad as
wooden ponies appearing
to gallop.

instead, you invited friends
to dinner parties outside
open & free as cattle roaming,
talking loud & frank until nightfall.
they did not like it one bit, watching
from their decks; there would be
no solace.
