John Anthony Fingleton’s most recent poem to appear here was “The Rain Began” (June 2019).
In the Beginning . . .
By John Anthony Fingleton
Beyond the realm of shadows,
Which always did exist,
Where isotopes and neutrons still collide;
A space of such omnipotence
That makes one want to stare,
Was created long before the skies.
And you, of no name – of many names,
Activating clouds of gas,
Distributing endless particles without monotheistic fear,
Destroying, sometimes forging,
Testing many lucid trials,
For a thousand, No a trillion million years.
Incentive to intensity,
You gathered and absorbed;
Pulled all matters into your orbit good and bad
Until the ice was rounded up, just like a herd,
That strayed too far,
And somewhere in that mix created man.
