Lore
By Rae Spencer

Each word rang
As it struck the page
Hammer on anvil

When read aloud
A shower of sparks
Fell from the tongue

And stories ignited
In open air
Before doused in time

Wrought of syllable
Their glowing links
Forge now
to then

  1. Ray Sharp says:

Great poem, Rae. It has the short, sharp rhythm of the blacksmith’s hammer ringing on metal, with percussive sounds like “struck.”
Really brings the idea of “wordsmithing” to life in sound and rhythm.
You have some fine writings at your web site.

  2. Jean says:

Rae, I tried to choose a favorite stanza among these, but not one triumphed over the others. Maybe, “glowing links
    forge now
    to then”

because it wraps the poem completely.

  3. Sharon says:

Rae, your words ‘ring’ true with music and power. And they reverberate in the reader’s mind, the poet’s soul. Beautiful work.

  4. You can also SEE this poem and the sparks that leap from the page and then glow.

  5. Vic says:

    Great imagery!

  6. Kathryn Brownlow says:

What a treat to all my senses. I can hear the ring of the hammer, feel the heat of the fire, and see the sparks rise. Your words make it happen.
