Love’s Succession

By Moriah LaChapell

Embers floating
upwards
in the dark forest.

Tides of fire
sweet pines
red wine
then deep sleep.

Memories
and dreams
of his laughter.

Then the wound
of love and fear
and loss
and loss of self
and the gift
of knowing
him.

beautiful, peaceful and sad as a night under the pines after the fire has gone to coals
