madeline’s garden of ashes
By Kate LaDew

tumbled into the backyard barbecue,
pink people rushed into green tiled kitchens
the green grass was gray, the green trees were gray,
the green house and the green trim and the green roof
were gray and gray and gray
the gray fence flowed down and around the green world
until the pink people shut their gray shutters and clenched their pink hands

(madeline fell asleep in the ashes,
woke up with dust on her lashes)

smiled gray teeth at the pink people inside the green world
