Magic markers on my deck
By Cary Lynne

Alone in a country home
oh so lovely in the light
but upon the coming night
the clown appeared
it came and went
obeying an aberrant schedule
for maximum fear
very clever
how to report
what isn’t there
most of the time
clever
a fashion clown
changing rearranging
red wig white face
yellow lined eyes
fangs
against the glass
Blue face big braids
black stitches laced
aboard a mocking mouth
so quick the flash
past the windows past the door
a fleeting wretched grin
stretched wide
across lips smeared
in bold crayon green
ugly clown
giddy like the punchy joker
a rattle on the pane
knocks on my bolted door
the silence
gotta give it to the clown
nice touch that silence
911 again again
Cops, they never saw him
too fast for them
sick. slick. clown.
so clever
they don’t believe me
he loves that
I just know it.
