Ode to My Chihuahua
By John Pursch

When you bust it down to the husk
you find you’re chewin’ on shells
spittin’ out bark, splinters, acorn grit
plowing through years of shady
hammock moonrise trance

to finally pop free in sunlit smile
of strewn eviscerated past
the sound of distant rivers
trotting in and out of
shadowed recompense

now on to chase a lizard, a fly
a trillion ants go calmly on
with their respective lives
tabulating mild minutiae
weary and belated

and now you find the kernel
what was always here
and chew the hell out of it
saliva everywhere
damn it’s good
just pieces of nut you gobble up
leaving some for the ants.
