On the Streets Where I Live
By Alita Pirkopf

In my childhood there were empty lots,
an accessible out-of-doors.
Our teacher read to us in a courtyard,
and we could fling ourselves about
in sports on a large outdoor field.
We walked to the park playground
safely on sidewalks and small streets.

I was moved by my days out into
the world’s directions. It is a new world.
More people and more grids. I would object,
but seas swallow, fires flare, populations
are dispersed, people die.
Any way, we can come together.
