Oops! Christmas ’04
By Alan Britt

When wine became the Covenant,
sure enough, that’s when the power grab began.

Why, though, do we even need a covenant
so long as we’re behaving ourselves?

I guess no one behaves, really.
Kings, Emperors, Czars, even Presidents
of the new world order
all trespass Jesus.

Hence, the pungent herbs of guilt
swirling like clouds of angels
each Christmas Eve as a gilded pipe organ
imitates the sobbing heart.
