Bobbie Troy’s poem Your Repast was published in March as part of Contributor Series 8: Feast and Famine. Always concise, Bobbie stretches when it comes to theme.

Over the Top*
By Bobbie Troy

over the top
at 7 am
for king and country
swallow your bile
fix bayonets
climb the ladders
on rotting feet

over the top
at 7 am
for king and country
charge into the guns
to search for glory
in the mud and swamp
of misplaced ideals

over the top
at 7 am
for king and country

*Author’s note: This was written after watching My Boy Jack, a Masterpiece Theater production based on the 1915 poem by Rudyard Kipling. Kipling wrote it after his beloved son John (called Jack) went missing in the Battle of Loos during WWI.
