Poet Station Approach
By Steven Minchin

I’m watching a poet approach
the train station because he needs
a place to wait—in the glass
before the doors split
to hinder, to stall, to instigate
departure through a series
of delays

I’m watching a Bic incrementally
transport a page to get to
or retard transcendence or mock
forced hesitation—making an art
recording stasis to keep
it static

The doors are closing when they open
and the glass reflecting either way
while I’m watching a poet berate a phrase

I know that he’s trying to say
“where are you going with this?”
