I Remember It Well. Sort of
By Paul Strohm

We had a great time. We were miserable.
I was funny. No, you weren’t.
Ah, yes, I remember the wine. It was cheap beer.
We had a very good steak. It was a MacBurger.
I left a good tip. I paid.

Ah, yes. I recall every detail.

That amazing starlit sky. It was a hot, humid day.
And the air was so sweet. You haven’t a clue.
How often I’ve thought of your long flowing hair. It was cut very short.
That cab ride in the park–We walked back to the office.
You dropped your flip phone. It was an iPad.

Ah, yes, something like that.

That stranger we met–It was your wife.
Those love songs we heard–It was awful hip hop.
You wore a sundress of blue. I had my hospital scrubs on.
Am I getting it right. Yeah, just not with me.
How young we were then! We were both collecting social security.

Ah, yes! I remember it well.

It’s time for your nap.
