Molly Frederick’s most recent poem to appear here was Confidence (May 2011). Molly writes beautifully about nature, or rather, Molly’s writing uses the natural world to explore the terrain of human nature.
Returning
By Molly Frederick
By Molly Frederick
When first I saw the stream, it was full and
flowing and it moved with a purpose
and a bright, tossing plan.
When next I saw it–far into summer–
nothing remained but a sunken path,
with tiny stones scattered like lost seeds,
where once the sparkling waters ran.
Surely a stream so well-established could not
vanish from the earth.
But that’s just what this one did.
Into the ground; into the hot, searing air of
summer days; into the blazing breath
of long summer afternoons; into
the languorous summer evenings and sultry
summer nights.
Since then, rains have come to moisten the earth
many times over.
Yet the stream has not returned; and no one seems
to mind, with the possible exception of me.
Waiting and expectations do not always yield
results.
It is a lesson to be learned over and over
throughout a lifetime.
Sometimes it takes what seems like a very long
forever for drops to form and coalesce
into a whole working body of achievement.
Flowing with its own transcendence into an
untrammeled stream of splashing water–
which always did have a plan.
And eventually did return.
