Mark Myers lives and writes in North Carolina. When he’s not writing he works as a land surveyor. His work was recently published at Ink Sweat and Tears and he maintains a blog where you can read more of his work. Mark’s poem here is a literary reminder that things aren’t always what they seem.
Schooled
By Mark Myers
Two boys 12 years of age meet at the store
It’s been a while, they hug, some new way
What is the bond?
One is obese and pale face white
the other too short and dark-skinned
redneck? gangsta?
Better than your preconceives
They rise above
This part they have been cast in
A permanent tragedy of dope and fires and lies
Where all the props are papier-mache
And the curtain comes down in crushes
They cross your lines and spit in your eye
With their funny little hug
They show you the fool
Glad to see you here Mark!
Love the line “Where all the props are papier-mache”
I loved this the first time I read it and I love it now. I know those two kids, not them specifically of course, but those two are always popping up in someone’s reality somewhere on this planet. It’s so good to see your work here Mark! 🙂
