Seeds
By Harris Tobias

Seeds planted
The little hummocks of earth hold the dreams
An endless song
the land and life
within me surges
plant a seed and see what emerges
What happened to my face?
I do not recognize the one I shave
a page has turned in a book I haven’t read
and only half-remembered
snatches of yesterday remain
But today I planted seeds
In the ground, in the womb, in the minds of children
I do not recall my direction
who is this man
I ask my reflection
Somewhere in aimless wandering
in the stench of cities and jobs
there became this man
and now the seeds are planted
a child on its way
a garden growing and pastures in my heart
