Something From Nothing

Something From Nothing

By Marc Carver

I watch people
as they become members of clubs.
I watch as they ask others questions.
As they spend time. They can’t sit still
they have to do things.
Go to work, go to the gym
anything to stop them doing
anything important in life.

The trouble is they believe.
They really believe in what they are doing.
Maybe I have it wrong. Perhaps they just
don’t want to be lonely.
Nobody ringing their phone
nobody sending them emails
nobody inviting them to this place or that.
They want to be doing
not thinking
not creating.
But if they stopped and thought
the only possible outcome of life is death
what would they do then?
Go shopping
send emails
go and be with people who would die
just like them?
Or would they say
I want to be remembered for something
a great poem or a painting?
So others could see what life is really about.
Even making lots of babies would do.
Something from nothing.
