The Sonnet of Syringa
By E.V. Wyler

Like the lands of the youthful Euphrates,
our fertile flora’s libido is spent
while fully blossomed lavender ladies
seductively secrete their springtime scent.

Legend claims lilacs once thwarted a rape:
Those fragrant florets they flirtingly flaunt
aided the maiden, Syringa, escape
the scorned Greek God they annually haunt.

Through brush and bramble, the brave nymph had run:
It’s where Pan knew she’d be trapped on his trail,
that into a lilac Syringa spun.
Lust lost in violence didn’t prevail!

When scents of Syringa ride spring breezes,
it’s still the remorseless Pan she teases!
