The Cellist
By Howard F. Stein

He pulls off
Brahms, Dvořák, Elgar, and Shostakovich
with panache.

He sways
with his instrument
like a ballroom dancer with a perfect partner;

He grimaces
with utmost conviction
as he negotiates strenuous passages;

He feigns
ecstasy with cultivated lack of affectation;

He plays
with burnished sheen
and resplendent flair;

He is a celebrity;
he looks good.
