It's just poetry, it won't bite

The Future

Sharon Poch is another Virginia-based writer. There really must be something in the water! Poch’s work has been published in Moondance
and two poetry anthologies. She recently won a Christine Sparks Award
for poetry. A late bloomer, she fell in love with poetry on the cusp of
middle age after raising three children, a husband, and assorted
neurotic pets. Following years of living abroad in Italy and England,
she and her naval spouse retired to Tidewater, VA, where she pens
stories from her heart, poems from her soul. This melodic poem ties
together symbolic differences along the continuum of time. It was
written for Poch’s niece and her family, expectant with a long-awaited
baby girl.

The Future
By Sharon Poch

Her belly,
Plump with hope
and amniotic fluid
shelters tomorrow’s offering

Sonogram results proclaim
a girl child
eye and skin color
yet unknown

in the miniature body
carrying genes for
blue and brown
dark and light

the lineage blended promise
of ancient Celt
and African blood
gifted from

Mother Eve
whose sin is washed
away in birth waters
of the future

Lovely, I want to thank you, Sharon, for reminding with “Mother Eve/whose sin is washed/away in birth waters”. This poem is ancient and modern, timeless.

This poem cries out for the beauty of all children, all parents, all races, to be recognized and appreciated, but, most of all, loved.
