The Return
By Sushant Supriye

Years later,
I have returned to my
childhood school.
A child’s familiar face is
peeping out of
an old classroom.

The hazy letters written on the blackboard
are becoming clear slowly.
The frozen faces of children
playing cricket in the ground
are becoming lively again.
Holding a chalk in the fingers,
two experienced eyes are
gazing out of the gold-rimmed specs.

I dust the cob-webs of my mind
and get up.

That shy tree is
still there in the lawn,
on the bark of which,
two innocent souls had
etched their curious names
around the symbol of a heart
one spring day.

The wrenched fists of time
are slowly opening up.
A child is preparing himself for future
in the mirror of memories.

Often,
this is how we return
to some places
before that final Return.
