Jeanette Cheezum’s most recent poem to appear here was “Alone” (July 2017)
Today’s Youth
By Jeanette Cheezum
Spiral curls, gauged ears
and a ring in her nose.
Tats on her arms hidden under
her blue flowing gown.
How will her cap fit
over her mohawk?
Six inch heels made of
plastic. Clickety, clack
across the stage.
Grinning from ear to ear.
Applause, applause, and
a half bow. Holding the
diploma high.
Off the stage two steps
at a time. Plans to party
already in the making.
Eight more years of
medical school and
then she will have to
become an adult.
A charming poem. Well said – great job.
Thanks, Frank.
Thank you, Vox.
Jeanette, WOW, did you ever paint a picture with words with this wonderful piece. You have captured it all – from hair and piercings, etc. to her thoughts as she exits the stage, dreaming of the evening’s party plans. An excellent commentary of what I too believe goes on in minds of our youth today! Great work!!
Thanks, Sandy.
Wow, I love this! How true of all of us.
Thanks, Bobbie.
Jeanette, the first thing that jumped out at me after reading this wonderful poem was the way you managed to create such strong imagery, appealing to the senses. I SAW this young woman so clearly, her mohawk, her ringed nose, even her tattoo’s hidden under her graduation gown. I HEARD her plastic high heels clicking across the stage. I felt her jubilation, saw her grin and triumphant half-bow when receiving her diploma, heard the applause. Especially loved the ending where, despite all she’s accomplished that day, her mind is already on the party! Perfect!
Haha. Thanks, Sandy. I appreciate that.
