It will not surprise you to learn that Rachel Lim lives and writes in Virginia. She says this poem: “is an exercise in ekphrasis, not to a specific piece, but to the form of the haiku. I attempted to capture the excitement, brevity, and commitment to nature found in a haiku, while moving out of the limitations of its form.” The next time you get bogged down in form, try thinking of it like this instead, and see what you get from it. Rachel got a great poem from that and you can too.

By Rachel Lim
pond
water still at twilight
mossy covered stones
gray and blue.
The ancient old pool
yawning and deep black
wrinkled reflections
silent and gray-bearded
frog
unexpected from the water’s edge
croak, croak, croak
frog-leap-jump-SPLASH
the pond awakens
the screaming, disturbed water
swallows the frog whole
gone
Good poem, much like life.
Love the idea of wrinkled reflections 🙂
Yes, very haiku-like and more. Welcome to another Virginia poet!
This is wonderful!
