Waiting for the words to come
By Christopher Roe

Wrapped in the cold, wet, gray day
a focused sadness descends
upon a lone figure sitting separate
from the crowd on an island of thought.
And he lets his mind drift through
the music hanging in the air and sails
through the currents of conversation
gathering flotsam and jetsam of inspiration
while examining each face
absorbing manners and looks
and imagining their stories.

*

The girl with the guitar case
carrying her heart’s song
that she shares with the world
in the anonymity of the night.
The young couple playing chess
with the same intensity as they play at life.
Women gossiping across a table
leaning forward in conspiratorial whispers
each trying to top the news of the other.
An obese man lecturing the counter help
on the evils of sugar and the wonders of honey.
And the growing noise mounts an assault
upon his lonely island trying to establish
a beach head where they hope to plant
the flags of their particular philosophies.
And the lone figure retreats from his island
to seek another island of hope and promise
still waiting for the words to come.
