The Woman in the Moon
By Anna Sanders

It’s night again
Quiet surrounds me
As I sit alone looking up at the sky.
I focus my eyes
Searching for my special friend
To appear once again.
Some nights she glows bright
In a cloudless sky
Smiling down at me from far above.
Other nights she is coy
As she peaks through a crack
In a thick layer of clouds.
But even when she is hidden from view
I am not anxious or sad
For I know without doubt she’s there.
I cherish my friend
She is constant and true
Just like the sister I’ve never had.
Our bond is unspoken
With no unmet expectations
To cause sorrow or pain.
As I continue to stare at my nightly friend
A thought crosses my mind.
Whoever said the face in the moon
Could only be that of a “man?”
