You Knew Me When
By Bobbie Troy

you can say
that you knew me when
our world was whole
and each day
was the beginning of a fairy tale
and each night was a happy ending

you can say

that you knew me when

my mood was as smooth

as Ella Fitzgerald’s voice

and you bent around me in harmony

you can say

that you knew me when

i was not bipolar

and not on meds

you can say

that you knew me when

as you walk out the door

Oh, Bobbie, when, from its title, to the last word, a poem can raise the melancholy, and sadness of a Blues song in your reader, without sinking into the maudlin, it is exceptional. This poem made my heart ache. I’ll return many times to reread it.
