Zelda
By Emily Davis

Stein’s mechanic called them Lost.
A whole generation wandering
these cobble-stoned streets, searching, waiting for–
are we there yet?
searching, waiting for–

Zelda’s had one too many,
searching her empty glass
for one more drop of whiskey,
waiting for Scott to tell her he loves her,
even though she doesn’t understand how he could.

Searching his eyes for that gentle persistence
as he repeats it.
Because she’s waiting,
wanting to feel what he sees
when his face softens.

Waiting for that moment
when the words feel like more
than just misplaced syllables
hastily slurred off his tongue
in an effort to beckon her from the balcony.

Searching for a steady hand to lead her insde,
a strong arm to clutch her tightly
and draw her in to that safe place
between heartbeats and shallow
breaths

where his whispered words extinguish
the need to wander or wonder.
