Molly Frederick’s most recent poem to appear here was Morning Passage (April 2013).
Insomnia
By Molly Frederick
I awoke at [4:30] this morning, filled
with my life.
How could I sleep when light
was seeping under my eyelids,
opening new glass doors to me?
Calling out in graceful gestures,
pulling me up and away
to the things I have to do, to the
half-finished things
I have left undone–
My inventions, my labors, my
enjoyments. The great, the small;
the beautiful, the sad.
~
Night is finished with me, the narrow
gap between yesterday and today
has been filled.
The promise was kept.
Birds have begun to sing of courage
and responsibility,
cracking the darkness with
immaculate miniature chisels,
releasing sweet sounds
into the fresh, soon-to-be-vital day.
Here too are hints of the sun’s approach,
brimming in the east,
rinsing the sky with the warm
streaming colors of morning.
So, donning whatever apparel is at hand,
I venture out
to see what can be done with this most
underappreciated,
at times most distrusted–endowment.
Another day.
From an insomniac this evening, this poem resonates.
Some really spectacular poems lately, Annmarie, including this one.
I absolutely love your words:
“Birds have begun to sing of courage
and responsibility,
cracking the darkness with
immaculate miniature chisels,
…
brimming in the east,
rinsing the sky with the warm
streaming colors of morning.”
