A New Land
By Anita McKay

The engine’s rumble
lifts to high pitched whine,
the pilot hits the brakes,
then comes the floating, floating
engineering replacing
imagination: this is how
people might travel, propelled
into the sky, arcing, silver mixed with blue,
controlled descent, rolling at last
parallel to the ground, touching.
Then those final moments
of anticipation, before the reality
of sight and smell and sound
replace the heart’s vision of a new land.
