I Thought I Heard the Moon
By Harris Tobias

Last night I heard the clouds scrape across the sky
What a ragged sound they made, loud
Like a rake on frozen ground
It made me want to stop and take a breath
I thought it was death come for me

Last night I thought I heard the moon
Steal across the sky, a sound
Like leaves across my drive
And while I was frightened
I was glad I was alive

Last night I heard the stars
Break and shatter
Shards scattered across the night
What’s the matter I was asked
But I could not speak from sheer delight
