crinum
By Andy Andrews

I fought it early this afternoon
the garden spade and the scraps of rope I found
were of little use
the monster and sun were more than I could bear
I left defeated and exhausted
defeated
exhausted
I returned with the setting sun and my wife
a worthy warrior, though with no real shoes
but we had real rope and a short steel bladed
spade that was sharp and light
and we fought
fought
we tried to bind it and drag it
but it is protected by a Saint
Christopher to be exact
and the protection was more than we could bear
and we left again defeated
and exhausted
that this sanctified land bears
a secular beast of its magnitude and strength
and that this sanctified beast
has again prevailed
the war is not over
