All the fallen girls all these broken girls
By KK Singh

Girl 1

Her tiny face tips toward mine in confession
Leaning across the round table laid out with buffet-grade china, “I have no
more excuses”
Lost
She smiles at me
Disappearing into nothing
“I didn’t show up for work, there was nothing there for me”
Later she confides about her move back home
“Mom was lonely, she could use the company”
How about: “I couldn’t scrape together rent and health insurance payments”
“Now I can move on,” her voice confident, her eyes trail off
Holding apologies for the reality that change won’t come so easily as words

Girl 2

Decades of serial monogamy, still no clue
She sighs, “Do you want to hear a story? It’s a love story”
Will you know the truth if I spell it out in block letters?
“I’ve never felt this way before,” she marvels
This epiphany you have: It’s rooted in a false understanding
She proclaims: “I’ve been trying too hard to please everyone except myself, but no more”
So this is selfishness: a fixation on how you are affected by the world, but utter
failure to understand your own role
“I’m happy” a sliver of conviction, cold and brittle
hope against hope
She soaks in the sun, poolside, freckled skin smelling of coconuts and
chlorine, but she worries why she can’t sleep at night
Did you settle down or just settle?

Houses of cards, domino rows, walls of men, it’s inevitable after all
Even the sturdiest of civilizations … so what chance does a girl have?
