A Short, Sweet Season

She’d stopped to speak.
Standing by the fence, 
awkward, shy as always,
I managed to respond,
smiling. 
Ah, chance . . . 
we’d agree to meet.
2. 
That September, 
seeming to bring to life
an old song’s lyrics,
she’d leave.
Knowing, we’d agreed
to live what of life 
we had together
to its full.
Ah, chance . . . 
never to meet again.
